This has got to be a typical 1920’s add here add there stairway . . . Way too skinny and steep, but “hey, it gets us up there” stairway. Luckily it’s the girls that live up there in the attic bedrooms, so we don’t have to worry about any adults growing weary of the near olympic training that would be a result of daily traveling these steps! In fact it is actually quite fun up there in those odd shaped rooms, almost like a “secret” club house and the girls love it.
The walls were a bandage color pink and the window had peeling paint hanging down, the carpet was, well shall we say . . . “dated” Here is a view from the top looking down, before we began any tear out at all. This is what it was folks!
and looking up . . .
My first task was to scrap and paint the window, which took me hours! We had the wall sprayed a neutral color a few years ago so they were already a creamy white. I decided since I had to pick girls up from school and then head to the airport that same day, I better just focus on one wall. I taped off and painted the wall that is seen from the downstairs.
This is also where I installed the railing. Of course this is all new to me, so I found this great video that sort of walked me through the process. It took me a few trys, but I soon had the railing installed and a freshly painted wall.
I hung a atomic clock just under the window where the girls can’t miss seeing it as they come down the stairs in the morning.
This is the wall before I used a nice soft color called “french gray” which is really a pale green shade which looks nice with the sharp white details here and there and accented by dark espresso brown.
Looking down after my DIY redo. We had already ripped off the carpeting and painted a floor grade paint on the stairs. I am thinking about doing the brown paper bag flooring on the stairs . . . but that will be another day!
In the yard behind our granny flat, I found this great old window I was just itching to use somewhere. I added a cute little vinyl bird and hung it high on my freshly painted wall. Voila! A great improvement indeed! Now to gather up the kiddos and off to the airport to pick up Grandma!!
