I saw a really cute idea on pinterest and have wanted to make it for a long time.
The end of the school year rolled around and I was looking for something to make for the elementary teachers . . . Ah ha! the perfect opportunity to try making that cute idea I saw!
Yippee!
But wait, then I remembered I live in a small town literally an hour from any city that would sell transfer sheets.
Think. Think. Think.
Oh yes, teachers used to use transfer sheets with overhead projectors.
Yeah, Yeah I know that was like over ten years ago long before smart boards.
So off to the school I went, feeling a wee bit bold for asking, but I did it anyway . . . I asked, “would you happen to have any spare transfer sheets laying around”?
So, long story short, an email went around to all the teachers in the school asking if any of them would have a transfer sheet they were willing to part with.
You won’t believe this! The school nurse had one! So funny, the NURSE!
So here’s what I did . . .
I used a free template from here and customized it to reflect my style and customized it with the teachers names.
Here are a few other cute ideas I found around the internet.
- several teacher gift ideas including this soap idea
- a subway art poem about hands with free download for template
Then I printed it using my home printer.
I took the printed labels and the transfer sheet down to the local print shop (yes, we have ONE in town) for less than a dollar he copied my label onto the transfer sheet.
Then I went to the dollar store and bought clear soap for $1 a bottle.
Most of the labels came off clean, but if they don’t use a little lighter fluid or goop off or something. I found this stuff in my husbands workbench and it did the trick for the ones that were stubborn and really stuck on!

I cut the labels apart, rolled them tightly and inserted the rolled transfer sheet into the bottle.

Viola! The transfer sheet unrolled and I had customized soap bottles! I did have to help some of the transfer sheets to unroll perfectly using the pump as I reinserted it to the bottle.

I added a ribbon and on some a little gift tag for my girls to write a thank you note.
The possibilities are endless here folks!
- use photos for fun creative custom soaps
- make a welcome message for a guest bathroom
- have your child draw or write or both and scan it into the computer to make the label for a teacher
- write a cute message about cleanliness to remind your kids how important it is to wash their hands
This is a really simple, inexpensive fun project that will leave everyone sayin’, “how did you do that?”!
Have fun! I’d love to see what you come up with . . . send me a photo or share your ideas in the comments below.
xoxo
